Our next adventure takes us to the upper part of Nicaragua, almost at the border with Honduras. There, hiding near a sleepy town, there is an incredible canyon that was “discovered” (to the outside world, not the locals) by a team of Czech scientists in 2004. It was made a National Monument in 2005. Community tourism is now being developed. You visit the canyon with a local guide and it is a lot of fun. The Canyon started to form about 13 million years ago, and it is the river Coco that goes all the way to the other side of Nicaragua to the Carribean.
We get up early and leave Esteli by bus.
Nothing like bus station coffee!
Each bus has its own style and “protection”.
This is why it is called “Chicken Buses”.
We get to the Canyon de Somoto.
Leaving the Canyon behind.
Back to Esteli with the “King of the Roads”.
